Cable-cars in high mountain applications shut down during heavy electrical storms as precautionary measure to avoid lightning striking the vehicle. This is necessary, because in steep climbing situations, the vehicle is frequently significantly above the nearest supporting structure and therefore may attract lightning. Frequently there is also difficulty with good, grounding for the pulling cables in the cable cars. For urban applications, this situation does not occur and lightning arresters on top of the pylons can provide adequate protection just as in any other elevated transit installation.
